The Weather Hut
In the Weather Hut it is the user who creates the weather, and subsequently experiences the consequences of the applied choices. Opened at the Bergen Science Centre by TV2 weather presenter Eli Kari Gjengedal 10.07.2008, the hut is constructed as a fun and interactive experience targeted at increasing knowledge about and interest in the subject matter of meteorology among the centres primarily young audience.
The Weather Hut is designed and implemented from the bottom up by Turbo Tape Games with scientific support from Storm Weather Centre. The installation consists of an actual hut with a glass roof and effect systems mounted on top and inside the walls. There are stroboscopic lights to simulate lightning, a stage light that dims according to sun, cloud and day / night conditions, an intricate set up of valves to produce rain in numerous degrees, and surround sound systems to produce wind and other sound effects.
The experimenter sets up an initial weather system over Europe through a touch monitor, and then engages the system. The weather as perceived over the city of Bergen is played out over the next minute, as a quick version of a full day. Isobars and familiar weather report icons are animated and projected on the inner hut wall.
"I think people will find this amusing, in here you get a lot of action!"
Eli Kari Gjengedal, weather presenter Storm Weather Centre / TV2
"It is important to present weather as something fun. The hope is that children will become curious about meteorology and science in general."
